Aroostook hospital, nurses agree on contract

Nurses at The Aroostook Medical Center have approved a new two-year contract after four months of negotiations and the threat of a strike.

The hospital's board of directors approved the contract Wednesday, after the 150 nurses represented by the Maine State Nurses Association/California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee Unit 7631 voted to ratify it last week, according to the Bangor Daily News. The contract includes a 2% wage increase for nurses, down from the 7% the union requested, enhanced safety procedures and changes to staffing procedures in critical care and emergency services.

The original contract expired Sept. 22, and last month the nurses voted to authorize a one-day strike if contract conditions weren't met, according to the paper.
