Ascendant eyes Rockland plant

Ascendant Energy Co. wants to build a $5 million solar panel manufacturing plant in Rockland that could employ nearly 40 people.

Chris Straka, the company's owner, will ask the City Council tonight to support his application for a $100,000 state Community Development Block Grant, according to VillageSoup. Financing also would come from the Maine Technology Asset Fund, which would contribute $2.5 million with private equity of more than $2 million.

Ascendant would manufacture its solar concentrator invention at the new plant, and employ 39 people earning wages from $17 to $50 an hour, VillageSoup reported. A site for the plant has not yet been chosen. Ascendant has research and development offices in Rockland and Portland.
