Auburn contractor lands $889K Opera House contract
H.E. Callahan Construction of Auburn has won the lead contract for the $1.1 million rehabilitation of the first floor of the historic Norway Opera House.
Callahan submitted the low bid of $889,000 to beat Ganneston Construction Corp. of Augusta and Great Falls Builders of Gorham, whose bids were in the range of $903,000 to $945,000, according to a report in the Sun Journal. A separate bid for the restoration of the back wall is expected to be opened within two weeks.
Located in Norway's downtown historic district, the 1894 Opera House will undergo a rehab of six, first-floor storefronts, including energy-efficiency improvements. Work is expected to begin after Labor Day and will take 20 to 24 weeks.
According to the Sun Journal, Callahan will be working under guidelines set by the National Park Service, which regulates buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places using historic tax credits.
