Auburn golf course's new owner scouting sites for mushroom facility

As the new owner of the Prospect Hill Golf Course in Auburn prepares for next month’s opening, she’s also on the lookout for land suitable for building a 15-acre mushroom-growing facility.

The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that Fang Cheng Morrow, president of the Mingjing Industry Group Co., and her business partner Nianping Wang, are hoping to build a facility for growing mushrooms that could create 150 jobs in the next two years.

Morrow told the newspaper that she and her partner closed on the golf course in December and see it as a long-term investment. But they also see Maine as being ideally suited for growing mushrooms, with Morrow saying that 40% of mushrooms consumed in the United States are imported from Asia.

Morrow added that it would take a year to build a facility that could grow enough mushrooms to ship up to 15 tractor-trailer loads out per week.
