A facility in Auburn that makes medical devices will close next year, its parent company announced Friday.
Warsaw, Ind.-based Symmetry Medical Inc., which makes orthopedic implants, will shutter its Riley facility in Auburn by the middle of 2010 and consolidate its operations into other facilities, according to a release from the company. While "staff reductions" are part of the restructuring, the company did not specify how many jobs would be lost at the Auburn facility, and representatives from Symmetry and the Riley facility could not be immediately reached for comment. Companywide, Symmetry employs 2,700 workers, according to the Wall Street Journal. The move is part of a restructuring effort aimed at saving $3.4 million, according to the company release.
In 2006, Symmetry Medical bought Auburn-based Riley Medical for $45 million, according to a release. Founded in 1983 in Massachusetts, Riley Medical relocated to Auburn in 1988, according to the company's website. In the Northeast, the company has facilities in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New York.
