Auburn medical tourism stalls for lack of investors

A $40 million proposal to create a Chinese medical tourism facility in Auburn has stalled, with its backers saying the project is still looking for foreign investors in order to proceed with the project.

Meanwhile, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported that Jeff Brickman, who last fall became president and CEO of Central Maine Medical Center — which was identified when the project was launched in July 2015 as where medical tourists from China would be treated when they came to Auburn — has never been contacted by the project's proponents.

“It’s not a project, from our perspective,” CMMC spokeswoman Ericka Dodge told the newspaper.

When the project was announced in July 2015, plans called for transforming a former shoe factory on Minot Avenue in Auburn into a five-star "state of-the-art health and wellness hotel," catering to rich Chinese patients seeking American medical treatments at CMMC. It was expected to attract 5,000 visitors a year and was originally expected to be open this year.
