The city of Auburn yesterday “opted in” under new state law to allow the sale of adult-use marijuana.
Existing medical marijuana businesses in Auburn now have 30 days to apply for an adult-use license with the city, according to a news release. Those that fail to apply by July 30 risk not being approved for a license, which would prohibit them from operating within Auburn.
Starting Aug. 1, new medical marijuana businesses (established after Dec. 13, 2018) will be allowed to complete Auburn’s marijuana business license application.
“This 30-day ‘window’ is very important for these existing businesses,” said Assistant City Manager Phil Crowell. “Getting them licensed before the new businesses will establish a ‘buffer zone’ that will prohibit someone from setting up shop right next door to them.”
Auburn’s marijuana business license process applies to stores, cultivation facilities, manufacturers, testing facilities and nurseries.
Registered medical marijuana caregivers who operate from their homes must apply to the city for a home occupation permit within 30 days.
An electronic version of the applications and a fact sheet on the process are available on the city’s website: auburnmaine.gov.
