The Pepsi bottling plant in Auburn is shutting down production of carbonated beverages and laying off 23 employees in mid-November.
Joe Blackburn, the company's human resources manager in Maine, attributed the layoffs to Pepsi's shift toward more water and juice beverages, according to the Sun Journal. Some workers will be offered early retirement and others will be transferred to new positions within the company, and the Maine Department of Labor will also assist affected workers. About 86 employees at the Pepsi Beverages Co. site will remain in the sales and warehousing departments, he said.
The plant, which produced 20-ounce, 2-liter and 1-liter carbonated drinks, was owned by Seltzer and Rydholm before Pepsi Bottling Group bought it in 2004, according to the Sun Journal and the Bangor Daily News. Pepsi Bottling Group merged with Pepsico earlier this year.
