The Augusta Downtown Alliance and private property owners have joined an initiative to fill empty storefronts on both Water Street and riverfront Front Street.
The partners said in a press release Tuesday the Pop-Up Downton Program will be a win for retail businesses, both pop-ups and ones that are already downtown, and landlords, too.
The partners are asking local and regional retail businesses, including startups, to submit proposals, with a goal of filling vacant properties, expanding downtown offerings, increasing foot traffic and also developing Front Street, along the river, bringing foot traffic to the waterfront.
Businesses sought are ones that sell gifts, home goods, decor, apparel, accessories, specialty food and drink, sporting rentals, boutiques, art items, locally made goods, children’s goods and other items that complement downtown businesses.
The Downtown Alliance and private property owners will offer low-rate, short-term leases to local entrepreneurs. Selected applicants will occupy vacant storefronts and possibly share retail spaces throughout the summer, fall and holiday seasons, with the goal of long-term occupancy after the program.
More merchants and products downtown will enhance the look and feel of Water and Front streets, and strengthen the retail core, as well as reduce negative visual impact of vacant storefronts.
It will also help businesses try a new market and reach customers, while helping landlords fill ground-floor vacancies and minimize costs and risks to businesses and landlords.
