Augusta, Gardiner eye municipal natural gas

City officials in Augusta and Gardiner are drafting a proposal to solicit bidders to expand natural gas service into the towns.

The Morning Sentinel reported that the proposal would model a request put out by the towns of Cumberland, Falmouth and Yarmouth, which seeks to lower heating costs for government buildings.

The request also would seek to make natural gas available for residents and businesses in the two Kennebec Valley cities.

The move would also open up another prospect for two companies — Maine Natural Gas and Summit Natural Gas of Maine — that have been battling over a contract to serve state buildings in Augusta.
