Avesta adds 18 affordable housing units to Portland
Avesta Housing will be unveiling its new 18-unit project to the public, Thomas Heights, at a grand opening ceremony on June 29 that will include Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling discussing the need for affordable housing in the area.
The $3.6 million building at 134 Washington Ave. was designed by the Portland-based firm Archetype Architects and built from the ground up by Hebert Housing of Lewiston. Funding for the project came from MaineHousing, LIHTC financing, the City of Portland, NeighborWorks America and Avesta Housing.
Thomas Heights is an energy-efficient building featuring high R-value insulation, water-conserving fixtures, boilers with efficiency greater or equal to 87% and Energy Star-qualified appliances and lighting. Public spaces in the building are equipped with energy heat recovery ventilators, motion-sensing light switches and variable refrigerant volume, high-efficiency heat pumps.
Thomas Heights also has a focus on providing affordable housing for veterans and is named after Thomas Ptacek, a well-known advocate for homeless veterans, according to a release from Avesta.
