Avesta Housing picked up some support at a public workshop this week in South Portland outlining plans for a mixed-use building it’s proposing with Quang Nguyen, owner of Le Variety, that would include low-income and market-rate housing.
The proposal, which includes retail space and a community center, involves a five-story building at 586-600 Westbrook St. in South Portland.
The Forecaster reported that residents at a neighborhood meeting expressed support for the Avesta Housing project.
“To me, this [the West End] is the dumping ground of South Portland,” Ferman Boswell said. “Nothing ever happens so we lose hope.”
The city council’s new West End Neighborhood Master Plan, adopted in August, calls for creating a neighborhood center and for redeveloping “the triangle” — a strip of land on Westbrook Street between Brick Hill and Redbank — into a more vibrant neighborhood center with community gathering spaces and streetscape improvements.
Avesta Housing is working with Kaplan Thompson Architects in Portland to come up with a design.
Next steps in the process include going before the city’s Planning Board by early December in order to meet a deadline for Maine State Housing Authority paperwork to be submitted by Feb. 8, 2018, the newspaper reported
