Aviation industry pushes for permanent tax break

Aviation industry representatives and some legislators are pushing to make permanent a tax exemption for aircraft and aircraft parts that are set to expire in 2015.

The Portland Press Herald reported aviation representatives testified Monday before the Legislature's Taxation Committee, which is considering a bill to make permanent the tax break estimated to cost the state $608,000 annually.

Supporters of the exemption say it keeps Maine on par with other New England states. Industry sources told the paper Vermont is the only state in the region to tax aircraft sales.

The tax exemption proposal has gained support from Gov. Paul LePage's administration and prominent Bangor Democrats, the paper reported.

The bill, LD 279, is sponsored by Rep. Andre Cushing, R-Hampden.
