Downeaster to get $12M Brunswick layover building

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority is moving ahead with plans for a train maintenance depot in Brunswick after securing full funding for the project.

The rail authority announced the decision to award the $12 million construction project to Portland-based firm Consigli Construction following a meeting of its board of directors Monday.

Rail officials expect the project, which still requires an environmental assessment reviewed by the public and the Federal Railroad Administration, will begin construction later this year.

The facility will be built to hold three trains for regular nightly maintenance work and will eliminate the need for empty trains to return to Portland for servicing. Once complete, the layover building will allow the rail authority to add one daily round trip between Brunswick and Boston.

Bids for the project were initially approved in mid-2012, but full funding for the project was not available and multiple federal grant requests for the project were unsuccessful.

The authority reported a new funding source allows it to use federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality funds for the project. The rail authority and Maine Department of Transportation signed off on the spending plan Monday.
