Bangor Daily News cutting 30 workers

The Bangor Daily News is cutting up to 30 jobs, less than two weeks after the Portland Press Herald reported it would cut 40 jobs.

The Bangor newspaper is offering voluntary buyouts to all of its 230 or so employees with the expectation that as many as 30 people will take the option, with a possibility of layoffs later, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. It may not be a net loss of 30 jobs, as some of the departing workers may be replaced because their jobs are essential, Todd Benoit, director of news and new media, told the news service. Benoit cited declining print revenues, in part because of a drop in classified revenue. A recent company memo also cited a "broad restructuring" as the news industry changes. In the last year, the Daily News added two reporters to cover southern Maine. A deadline for staff to decide whether to take the buyout is Oct. 3.

The Portland Newspaper Guild the week of Sept. 12 was notified that the Press Herald plans to shrink its work force by 15% due to declining revenues, first offering buyouts and then laying off if enough people do not leave voluntarily.
