Rudman Winchell, a law firm in Bangor, is expanding with a second office in Ellsworth, and says the new location will help the firm better serve the Downeast region.

A three-person law practice, Lambert Coffin, is merging into Rudman Winchell, and is already providing space in Ellsworth for the new parent firm. Terms of the merger are not being disclosed.

The location, 77 State St., is within walking distance to the downtown and steps from Ellsworth City Hall.

“We are merging that office into our firm and are currently utilizing their space,” Carin Sychterz, Rudman Winchell’s manager of business development, told Mainebiz.

A decision hasn’t been made yet whether to buy or lease the property.

“The future of that space is yet to be decided,” she said. “We hope to know more in the coming months.”

Planning for renovations is in the works. Rudman Winchell expects to be operational there by Aug. 1.

“We currently do a lot of work in Ellsworth, so this was a next good step for the firm and the communities we serve,” she added.

Rudman Winchell was established in 1917. Since 1971, the firm has been headquartered in Bangor's 111-year-old Graham Building, at 84 Harlow St.

A Lambert Coffin attorney at the Ellsworth location, Diane O’Connell, will join Rudman Winchell along with her staff. O’Connell will maintain her practice in Ellsworth.

Rudman Winchell’s managing partner, Christopher Austin, said that growing footprint in Maine will allow the firm to more easily attract young talent while meeting the growing need for legal services in the Downeast area.

“This location in Ellsworth complements the Bangor team and represents our steadfast commitment to continuing to provide excellent service to the people and businesses of Maine,” Austin said in a news release.

O’Connell will take the lead at the Ellsworth location.

She studied accounting and law at Otago University in New Zealand, beginning her legal career in 1996. After emigrating to the United States and being admitted to the Maine Bar, she moved Downeast in 2003, where she joined James Patterson in his law practice in Ellsworth.

Her areas of practice focus on commercial and residential real estate, corporate and small business, estate planning and administration, and municipal law.
