The Maine Association of Realtors Foundation, the charitable arm of the Maine Association of Realtors, has awarded $80,000 through its competitive grant program to nine nonprofit organizations to address housing needs across the state.

The grants come from the foundation’s affordable housing fund.

Seven organizations each received $10,000.

• Emmaus Homeless Shelter will use its grant to expand the operation of its diversion program and provide financial assistance to Hancock County individuals and families at risk of homelessness.

• Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor will purchase building materials for its critical home repair program, which addresses health and safety issues and enables Penobscot County homeowners to continue to live in their homes.

• Maine Seacoast Mission will purchase materials and pay salary expenses of staff overseeing the rehabilitation of sub-standard homes of low-income seniors, families, veterans and people with disabilities in Washington County.

• New Beginnings, serving Androscoggin, Kennebec and Franklin counties, will provide rent assistance and case management services to homeless youth transitioning from a shelter to stable, independent housing.

• New Hope Midcoast will pay for emergency lodging costs and deliver case management services to individuals living in Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties at risk or experiencing homelessness due to domestic violence.

• Rebuilding Together – Lewiston/Auburn will purchase building materials and repair homes of those who, due to financial hardship, age and/or disability, cannot do the work themselves.

• Rural Community Action Ministry will deliver home repairs, accessibility modification, emergency housing and homeless prevention programs in rural Central and Western Maine counties.

Two organizations each received $5,000.

• Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland will purchase critical home repair program building materials and pay contractors, when needed, to address unsafe roofing and flooring, lack of heat, and electrical and plumbing hazards of struggling homeowners in Cumberland County.

• Sebago Lakes Region Fuller Center for Housing, serving aging adults and veterans in the Raymond, Standish and Windham area, will install a new ADA entry door and build a deck and ramp for a homebound senior couple.

“More than ever, Realtors remain dedicated to providing financial assistance to experienced non-profit organizations on the front lines delivering programs and services that assist with homebuying, housing rehabilitation, and combat homelessness,” said Judy Oberg, the foundation’s 2022 chair and a broker at Oberg Insurance and Real Estate Agency in Bridgton.

The fund was established in 1989 and derives its revenue from interest earnings paid by financial institutions on real estate trust accounts administered by Realtor offices across Maine.

The foundation has invested $2.7 million since then to support Maine nonprofits.
