Bangor’s planning board on Tuesday night gave unanimous approval for an IHOP to be built inside the existing Roadway Inn on Odin Road, WABI-TV reported.
The development plan calls for overhauling the parking lot and adding new landscaping, the CBS-affiliated television station reported.
To make room for the additions, the number of hotel rooms is to be reduced from 90 to 79, according to the report.
"It's nice to see that existing properties are seeing the upside in reinvesting in their property, ” Tanya Emery, the city’s director of community and economic development, is quoted as saying. “We see a lot of buildings that get torn down and businesses starting over. It is really nice to see that a hotel that has been in the Bangor market for a long time sees that there's continued upside in the market and they are reinvesting and updating the product and adding the addition of a free standing restaurant.”
Elsewhere in Maine, there are IHOPs in Auburn, Augusta, South Portland and Saco.
IHOP eateries are franchised and operated by Glendale, Calif.-based International House of Pancakes, LLC, and its affiliates. IHOP, founded in 1958, has been a global brand since 1969. Last month it announced its first foray into South America, with plans to open 25 restaurants in Peru in the next 10 years.
The company is a subsidiary of publicly traded Dine International Brands Global (NYSE: DIN), which has a current market value of around $1.28 billion. Dine International also owns the Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill + Bar brand.
