The city of Bangor has voided its five-year contract with the KahBang Festival after it suddenly relocated this year’s festivities to Portland without giving public officials notice.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the Bangor City Council’s government operations committee agreed Monday night that KahBang’s organizers voided the contract by backing out of its commitment to hold the festival on the Bangor Waterfront. This means the festival will no longer have reserved weekends for the Bangor Waterfront for 2015 and 2016.
With the contract now considered terminated, KahBang’s organizers will have to apply for an event permit if they wish to hold the festival on the city’s waterfront again.
Sprague said he understands that KahBang’s organizers had to move the festival for business reasons, and that he welcomes the organizers to speak with him about its future. However, he said, the city is now considering what event could replace KahBang this year on Aug. 7-10 and future years if need be. He said it’s unlikely the city will pursue any legal action.
KahBang organizers have said the music, film and arts festival was relocated to various venues in Portland because of a "series of logistic issues" in Bangor. Low ticket sales and the inability to locate a nearby campsite for attendees and artists were two such issues.
Joshua Gass, the festival's executive director, told Mainebiz last week that the move is "bittersweet," and that organizers will consider the festival's future by the end of the year.
