Base reuse plans face delay

Reuse plans for the Brunswick Naval Air Station have hit a snag, forcing redevelopment officials to postpone plans to take over the base's airport.

The Navy has pushed back its schedule for filing environmental impact statements on the airport property from May until August or September, preventing the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority from taking over operations of the airport this spring as originally intended, according to The Times Record. Per federal base closure procedures, properties cannot be used for civilian operations until impact statements are complete. The 850-acre airfield will cease operation as a military installation on Jan. 29, and MRRA has been touting the property as a site for aviation-related businesses. The organization has been in talks with Oxford Aviation, but so far no businesses have signed on to locate on the property.

Meanwhile, MRRA's board of directors voted unanimously to tap FlightLevel Aviation of Norwood, Mass., as the airport's fixed base operator. The company would be responsible for managing refueling, maintenance and aircraft services, and was chosen out of three finalists named in September. MRRA must finalize a contract with FlightLevel before the deal is complete.
