Maine officials' efforts to revive ferry service between the state and Nova Scotia could be derailed by an investment group's plans to do the same in Boston.
A group of investors known as American Ferries Inc. is exploring a year-round ferry service between Boston and Halifax, Nova Scotia, which could complicate plans to bring back The CAT ferry service from Portland and Bar Harbor to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, according to the Portland Press Herald. Martin Karlsen, the lead project proponent for American Ferries, said the group is considering Boston and Halifax because they both represent larger markets, and that The CAT's cancellation could help propel the project.
The group is still raising capital and will not rely on a government subsidy, as did The CAT, and it's unlikely the service will launch this year. Portland City Manager Joe Gray said the Boston-to-Halifax service would make it hard to bring back service in Maine, and that he plans to work with Nova Scotia officials to recruit a new ferry service.
Bay Ferries Ltd. announced in December that The CAT service, which began in 1997, would not resume this season due to a lack of funding. Officials in Nova Scotia are lobbying for the government to reinstate the ferry's subsidy.
