Bath Iron Works hit by layoffs

Bath Iron Works is planning to lay off 48 workers in two weeks, citing changes in demand for trades needed to complete current work.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the shipyard on Tuesday informed 39 pipefitters and nine machinists that they will be laid off. However, the workers will receive an extra 30 days of work in other trades after their layoff date on Jan. 21.

The shipyard continues to hire workers in other trades as work progresses on two DDG-1000 destroyers and a DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyer for the U.S. Navy.
