Passenger traffic at Bangor International Airport rose in July for the sixth consecutive month, a dose of good news following recent announcements of service cuts by two major carriers.
July's numbers climbed 9.6%, following an 11% increase in June and a 22% increase in May, according to a press release. Overall, passenger traffic is up 9.8% for the year. BIA's passenger numbers are recovering from recent years due to better fares from airlines seeking to compensate for nationally weakened demand, the release states.
The number of seats available at the airport rose by only 2% in July, however, and capacity at the airport is down 4% for the last 12 months. Earlier this month, Continental Airlines announced it will would pull its service from BIA and Delta Air Lines, the airport's biggest carrier, said it would end flights between Bangor and Boston's Logan International Airport on Dec. 1. "Our strong passenger numbers for the last six months puts us in a good position to discuss future service opportunities with the airlines," Airport Director Rebecca Hupp said in the release.
