FairPoint will hire consultant to tackle problems

FairPoint Communications has agreed to hire an independent consultant to study its technologies and processes per the recommendation of the state Public Advocate's Office.

Peter Nixon, the North Carolina-based company's president, told the Legislature's Utilities and Energy Committee yesterday that the company would give state regulators access to the consultant and any information or recommendations made, according to the Portland Press Herald. FairPoint has replaced and consolidated the communications system it purchased from Verizon, but integration of the new software has proven more difficult and time-consuming than originally anticipated. Nixon said the company is looking into various information technology companies and plans to find a consultant quickly.

FairPoint has been facing some financial troubles due to problems with its takeover of Verizon's landlines in northern New England. Last month, the Maine Public Utilities Commission refused to waive $400,000 in penalties for technical problems and poor performance. The company however was able to renegotiate some of $500 million in debt with bondholders, helping the company avoid filing for bankruptcy.
