The Georgia-based Flowers Foods has signed an early agreement to acquire a Biddeford bakery from the bankrupt Hostess Brands Inc.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Hostess on Friday chose two bids from Flowers for six Hostess bread brands, 38 distribution centers and 20 bakeries, which includes the Biddeford bakery. Flowers already owns Auburn-based Lepage Bakeries.
However, Flowers spokesman Keith Hancock told the paper that the deal is far from done and only marks the beginning of a bankruptcy court process that will include a chance for competing bidders to challenge Flowers in an auction.
A Hostess spokesman told the paper that the auction would likely happen in late February and a sale is expected by mid-March.
Hancock declined to tell the paper whether Flowers plans to reopen the Biddeford plant or rehire any of the 370 workers that were laid off last year as Hostess sputtered into insolvency.
