Biddeford voters on Nov. 4 will decide whether to shut down the Biddeford Municipal Airport at a cost of $3.6 million.
The single-runway airport has been the cause of years of dispute, with neighbors protesting tree cutting and the enforcement of no-trespassing rules on the popular space, the Portland Press Herald reported. Paul Archambault, a resident who abuts the airport, told the Press Herald that his group would like to turn the airport into an industrial park or wind farm to generate power for nearby schools.
City Manager John Bubier said the airport takes in $56,000 in revenue and some years spends more than that on maintenance and utilities and some years spends less, the paper reported. If the proposal passes, the city will need federal approval to shut down the airport and will have to buy back privately owned hangars, repay grants, and fix up environmental problems at the site, which will cost about $3.6 million.
