Distribution and production of Maine-brewed beer is on the rise while sales of national brands have fallen in the state, according to sales totals for 2011.
The Bangor Daily News reports that Maine breweries have increased output by around 2.3 million gallons from 2009 to 2011, representing a 56% percent increase in two years.
The BDN reports that state statistics showed declines for national brands, including Anheuser-Busch, Miller, Coors and Pabst, each of which sells over a million gallons a year in the state.
Maine's two largest breweries — Shipyard and Allagash — both reported increased output, with Shipyard brewing over 1 million gallons more from 2010 to 2011 and Allagash breaking 1 million gallons, an increase of 42% over 2010.
Shipyard's president, Fred Forsley, told the BDN that he expects the growing brewery to sell in all 50 states "within the next three to five years."
