Maine ranks 3rd for $426M fisheries take

The $426 million haul from Maine's commercial fishing industry in 2011 ranks third in the nation, behind Alaska and Massachusetts, according to the latest federal tallies.

Statistics from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show Maine ranked third on the list of 30 states, all of which have larger populations, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Those revenue figures are based on reports of what fishermen are paid for their catch.

In Alaska, that figure came to $1.9 billion and, in Massachusetts, $570 million.

Nearly 80% of Maine's total fisheries earnings were from lobster, which made up $334 million of the $426 million in sales, according to the 2011 figures.
