BIW lays off 63

Bath Iron Works is scheduled to lay off 63 people from the shipyard's largest union, the leadership of which is currently under investigation for financial mismanagement and other infractions.

The layoffs, effective April 4, affect pipefitters, ship riggers and other positions at the Bath shipyard, The Times Record in Brunswick reported. Jim DeMartini, a BIW spokesman, told the paper the shipyard will work to minimize the layoffs by moving workers into different positions.

All 63 employees are members of Local S6, where officers earlier this month were suspended by its parent organization, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, pending an investigation into allegations that the union mismanaged its finances, irregular elections and that its members were viewing pornography on union computers. DeMartini told the newspaper the layoffs are not related to the union's investigation.
