BIW nets $8.3M in contract addition

Bath Iron Works has been awarded more than $8 million from the U.S. Navy for additional work on a new class of destroyers.

The shipyard received a contract modification for $8.3 million for additional design and construction work on the DDG-1000 class destroyer program, according to a press release from Sen. Susan Collins. The modification will support work on the destroyer's peripheral vertical launch systems units.

BIW in 2008 was awarded the contract for the first DDG-1000 destroyer, which is currently under construction. Defense Secretary Robert Gates last year announced that BIW would build all three ships in the DDG-1000 class. The full contract for the second ship is expected to be awarded later this summer.
