BIW nets combat vessel contract

The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works a contract to assist in the construction of high-speed combat vessels.

The contract supports work for more than 100 people on a BIW-led team to build the littoral combat ship Coronado, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins' office. Work on the ship will take place in Bath and Mobile, Ala., and is expected to be complete by June 2012. It also allows BIW to compete for a contract for work on up to three additional LCS ships.

No dollar amount for the contract was specified.
