Officials in Northfield are opposing a proposal to build a regional airport in this Washington County town.
The town's selectmen on Friday issued a statement arguing that they were not included during the review process that chose a 1,800-acre parcel of land on the town line between Northfield and Marshfield as the spot for a new airport, according to the Bangor Daily News. On April 20, Massachusetts-based consulting firm Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. named the property its preferred site for a $10-$12 million airport to replace the current airport in Machias, which area officials say is too small to accommodate larger business-class jets.
But Northfield selectmen said they were never included in the site selection process, arguing an airport in the town would cause environmental harm and damage the quality of life, according to the paper. Machias Town Manager Betsy Fitzgerald, who spearheaded the site review process, told the paper officials from Northfield were asked to attend meetings but never showed up. A public hearing on the proposed airport is scheduled for May 12.
