BIW on track with first Zumwalt destroyer

Bath Iron Works is on schedule to christen the Navy’s first DDG 1000 class destroyer in October.

The Associated Press reported the Bath shipyard will hold the christening ceremony for the $3 billion ship on Oct. 19. Earlier this month, BIW also landed a $212 million contract modification to its agreement to build the Navy’s third DDG 1000 destroyer.

The AP reported that the expensive stealth design was at first criticized for its cost but the Navy now views the ships as central to its China strategy.
