BIW project in jeopardy

Bath Iron Works is the general contractor on a combat ship project U.S. lawmakers is considering pulling the plug on because of mounting costs on the project.

The Senate Appropriations Committee earlier this week recommended that the U.S. Navy's $950 million budget request to build two Littoral Combat Ships be cut, according to the Associated Press. The committee is concerned about cost overruns, especially after Lockheed Martin, which is building one of the two ships, said it would cost $350 million to build the ship instead of the original budget of $270 million.

The ships are being built by Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics, Bath Iron Works' parent company. Bath Iron Works is involved in building the General Dynamics ship at an Alabama shipyard. There was no word on when the Navy budget will be set.
