UMaine privatizes health center

The University of Maine in Orono will turn over operation of its campus health center to a private health care provider.

The change will expand the Cutler Health Center's hours and offer more payment options for students, according to the Bangor Daily News. UMaine has considered privatizing the health center for about two years, mainly because the health center is unable to bill insurance companies for the services it provides, and it cannot afford to hire staff to handle third-party billing.

The university currently is considering proposals by three area primary care providers, who UMaine officials did not name, and could choose a provider by the end of this year, according to the paper.
