BIW to lay off 81 more in November

Bath Iron Works plans to lay off 81 workers in various trades on Nov. 22, a move that comes after two recent layoff announcements for 81 other workers.

The Bangor Daily News reported company spokesman Jim DeMartini confirmed Thursday the layoff announcement for some insulators, outside machinists, preservation techs, shipfitters and metal preparation technicians at the Bath shipyard.

DeMartini said the latest layoff decision comes as the shipyard builds fewer ships amid tighter competition.

The company may curb the number of layoffs, as it did in September, if the shipyard finds additional work for those employees.

Last month, the shipyard laid off 42 pipe coverers and last week announced plans to lay off 39 pipefitters on Nov. 18.
