BIW wins $8.5M contract addition

Bath Iron Works has won a nearly $8.5 million contract modification for work on the new line of destroyers currently being built there.

The Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded BIW an $8,494,937 contract modification for additional work on the DDG-1000 destroyer, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Appropriations committees. The modification will fund additional systems engineering services related to design and construction of the new destroyer class, for which BIW is the lead contractor. BIW in 2008 was awarded the contract for the first DDG-1000 destroyer, which is currently under construction, and is slated to build all three ships in the class.

Work related to the recent contract modification is expected to be completed by September 2011, according to the release.
