Retail sales resume rise

After a small slide in August, retail sales in September rose 1.2% over the same month last year, fueled by jumps in auto and transportation and lodging sales.

Total taxable retail sales in September were $1.55 billion, compared with $1.53 billion in September 2009, according to the Maine State Planning Office. Auto and transportation sales saw the biggest gain, rising 4.8%, while lodging sales increased 3.7%. Sales fell in only one category, building supply, dropping 5.9% compared with the same month last year. Retail sales fell 1% in August after months of increases.

Year to date, Maine retail sales are 2.7% higher than the same period one year ago.
