Biz community gets $$ to prepare for disaster

The federal government has awarded Maine a $250,000 grant to help businesses in the state better prepare for natural disasters.

Maine sought the funds, which come from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration, to aid the seven counties -- Aroostook, Piscataquis, Penobscot, Somerset, Lincoln, Waldo and Knox -- that were impacted by the severe storms that hit the region in April and May of 2008, according to a press release from Gov. John Baldacci's office.

A representative from the EDA was in Augusta yesterday and said the funds will help Maine create a disaster preparedness model that can be used throughout the state.
