ME State Pier hits new snag

Another permitting issue may hamper development of Portland's 86-year old Maine State Pier.

To protect coastal wetlands, Maine's Department of Environmental Protection forbids "non-water-dependent" development on piers around the state. However, the state Board of Environmental Protection is considering an amendment to the rule that would allow development like the six-story hotel Portland-based Olympia Cos. has planned for the site, according to the Portland Press Herald.

If the rules remain unchanged, the state would be required to reject a permit request from Olympia Cos. for the $100 million project. The Maine State Pier redevelopment is also currently mired in a dispute between the state and the city over which entity owns the sea floor under the pier.
