Fishing stocks low, cuts feared

A new federal report shows that while some fish species such as haddock and cod are rebounding, others, including most species of flounder, are severely depleted.

The scientific report released from the National Marine Fisheries Service is expected to be followed by federal fishing cuts for next spring, the Portland Press Herald reported.

A New England advisory panels has asked that the NMFS adopt interim restrictions, such as an 18% cut in fishing days. Any new rules would have to be posted by the end of this year to take effect May 1, the paper reported.
