Book publisher sues Amazon

An on-demand book publisher in Bangor has filed a class-action lawsuit against Amazon.com, claiming the Internet behemoth is violating anti-trust laws.

BookLocker.com owner Angela Adair-Hoy says Amazon's recent decision to use only one on-demand publisher on its website violates anti-trust laws, according to the Bangor Daily News. Adair-Hoy, who filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court on Monday, estimates that about 4,300 other on-demand print publishers could join the suit.

"Print on demand" means copies of a book are printed only when an order has been received. While a number of POD companies exist, Amazon said last winter that it would only directly sell POD books printed by BookSurge on its website. Book Surge is a wholly-owned Amazon subsidiary. According to a statement on Amazon.com's website, the company is working with just one POD for faster customer service.
