Boralex to keep power plant open

Boralex Inc. has signed a power supply contract that will prevent the closure of one of its northern Maine power plants.

Montreal-based Boralex said it has signed a two-year Power Purchase Agreement with New Brunswick Power Generation Corp. to supply power generated at its wood-residue thermal power plant in Fort Fairfield, according to a press release from the company. The power plant is currently closed, but will be restarted by the end of March.

The company in late February said it would close its two plants in Fort Fairfield and Stacyville because its contract to sell power to Chicago-based Integrys Energy Systems, which previously provided power to the northern Maine power grid, would not be renewed. At the time, the company said the shutdowns would put 49 people out of work. It was not clear how many people work at the Fort Fairfield plant.
