Dan Brennan, a member of MaineHousing’s leadership team, is the new director of the $1.7 billion financial institution that serves more than 90,000 people statewide annually.
Nominated by Gov. Paul LePage on March 19, Brennan was unanimously confirmed by the the Maine Senate on Thursday, just two days after a unanimous vote by the Legislature’s Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee.
He succeeds John Gallagher, who retired in January after more than 40 years in Maine’s housing industry and was appointed to MaineHousing’s board of commissioners in February.
Brennan has been serving as senior director of programs, overseeing departments responsible for creating single and multifamily housing, addressing homelessness, managing Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers and administering the federal Home Energy Assistance Program as well as the Department of Energy Weatherization Program.
“I’m humbled to receive this opportunity to lead MaineHousing as our agency continues to implement solid research-based and cost effective strategies to fulfill our mission,” Brennan said in a news release. “MaineHousing has thoughtfully developed a five-year plan that includes input from our customers, staff, and partners throughout the state. I am proud to work with people who share my commitment to help people of lower incomes or who are homeless with their individual needs.”
In his confirmation hearing, Brennan told the Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee that between 2005, when he took responsibility for MaineHousing’s multi-family development efforts, and 2015 he oversaw the financing of over 125 projects. Those projects created or preserved nearly 4,000 units of housing, totaling nearly $700 million in total financing.
