Brewer mfg to close, lay off 127

A German company will close its auto parts manufacturing facility in Brewer by 2010, putting 127 employees out of work.

ZF Lemforder, which has its U.S. headquarters in Northville, Mich., informed the city of Brewer of its decision yesterday. The company produces steering wheel components for a number of foreign and domestic vehicle makers at its Brewer facility, which it opened in 1980 as its first of 23 North American plants, according to the Bangor Daily News. A spokesman for the company said a significant reduction in vehicle production in the auto industry led to the company's decision, the paper reported. "The loss of these jobs and their corporate citizenship will be a blow to the entire region," D'arcy Main-Boyington, Brewer's director of economic development, said in a statement.

Just last month, the company temporarily laid off 45 employees because of closures at General Motors and Mercedes. The company will work with the city to find a new tenant for the facility.

Brewer Automotive Components, which ZF Lemforder and a Japanese auto parts manufacturer opened in the same industrial park in 1989, will not be affected by the decision, the paper reported.
