A national beer economist is set to headline the New England Craft Brew Summit, which is expected to attract more than 500 regional brewers when the summit returns to Portland on March 8-9.
Bart Watson is the chief economist of the Brewers Association in Boulder, Colo. The association works to promote and protect small and independent American brewers and Watson leads its economic analysis, market research and industry forecasting.
He will deliver the keynote address, “Craft’s Changing and Maturing Market,” which will focus on the economic outlook for the industry and what brewers can expect in the coming year.
“As always, the beverage, alcohol and craft markets are evolving, and I’m hoping to give brewers the broad economic, demographic and market context to understand those changes and apply them to their businesses,” Watson said.
The New England Brew Summit is hosted by the Maine Brewers’ Guild, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and protecting the craft beer industry in Maine. The summit is a gathering for brewers, brewery owners, and those who work with brewers in the six New England states. The event features panel discussions from brewers and owners and advice from professional service providers on a wide range of topics impacting the craft beer industry.
The theme of the summit this year is “Focus on what you can control.” The conference will feature more than 20 workshops, including mental health and self-care, building a carbon capture program and sustainably managing brewery wastewater.
“This year’s summit is all about practical advice,” said Sean Sullivan, Maine Brewers’ Guild executive director. “We can’t solve the global economy’s challenges in a daylong conference, but we can continue to develop our industry’s recipe for success: focusing on creating quality products with local ingredients in welcoming spaces where communities can come together.”
Maine brewers will kick off the summit with a Tap Takeover event at Portland craft beer bar Thirsty Pig on March 8. At 5 p.m., there will be an orientation to showcase Maine’s newest breweries. Click here for more information. Registration is required for all events as space is limited.
