Black Bear Brewing Co., an Orono-based family owned brewery and tap room, is opening its second tap room in Bangor’s historic Nichols Block.
The expansion to a second site was announced by ANM Properties LLC, which purchased six buildings on Exchange Street about a year ago, including Nichols Block.
“We decided to open a second location in Bangor because we are from here and want to contribute to the great community that has become downtown,” Tim Gallon, owner and brewmaster at Black Bear Brewing, said in a news release. “We have a great product that people will enjoy. We also like the vision and excitement that Adam Moskovitz with ANM Properties is bringing to the block. It’s exciting and we wanted to be a part of it.”
Gallon expects the new tap room to have between 50 to 60 seats with the Black Bear’s core lineup of six different beers on tap, with an additional six to eight rotating taps. Gallon also plans to have a pilot brewery in the building, which will produce one barrel at a time for special releases. Gallon says that they hope to have a small stage for live music as well.
“We’re aiming for a rustic, comfortable atmosphere,” said Gallon. “We’re really excited about all of the possibilities that we will be able to do with the space.”
Gallon says that he is expecting to add another six to eight employees at the Bangor location in addition to the employees already on staff in Orono. Construction should begin within the next couple of weeks and Gallon is hoping to open the doors to the public by early 2018.
Black Bear Brewing is the latest tenant announcement at the 53,000-square-foot six-building block on Exchange Street. Other new tenants include the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and other arts organizations to form the Bangor Arts Exchange and Thompson-Hamel, a financial planning and payroll processing firm.
“When we purchased this block of buildings last October, we knew that we had something special on our hands,” said ANM Properties CEO Adam Moskovitz. “The addition of Black Bear Brewing is an addition to the energy of downtown Bangor. There’s a renewed sense of enthusiasm for this side of downtown, and we are seeing it and feeling it every day.”
ANM Properties LLC, is a Bangor-based property management firm specializing in luxury apartment rentals, design-build and now commercial development.
