Brown confirmed as DEP commissioner

Despite initial concerns, legislators have confirmed Darryl Brown as commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection, and also backed Mary Mayhew to head the Department of Health and Human Services.

The Senate voted 29-6 in favor of Brown, who was sworn into office shortly thereafter, according to MaineToday Media. A legislative committee last week offered split support of Brown, raising concerns over a conflict of interest. Brown is founder of Main-Land Development Consultants, a planning company in Livermore Falls that is leading development of the Oxford casino, and the six Democrats who opposed Brown's confirmation said it would put the DEP under "a cloud of suspicion." According to the company's website, Brown is resigning as president of the company.

In related news, the Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee voted 10-3 to endorse Mayhew for commissioner of DHHS, according to the news company. Mayhew previously served as vice president of the Maine Hospital Association. The Senate must still confirm her appointment.
