Budget cuts forces Sweetser's hand

Sweetser is relocating several of its mental health services to Saco because of state budget cuts.

The Saco-based health services provider is consolidating its residential crisis services in Portland and its group care services in Sanford and Scarborough at its Saco facility, according to a press release from the nonprofit. The consolidation will eliminate 65 positions, according to the Journal Tribune.

Carl Pendleton, Sweetser's president and CEO, said the organization remains dedicated to its mission of providing Mainers with mental health and substance abuse services. "Reductions in state funding are painful," Pendleton said in the release. "But we have been successful in serving the needs of Maine for almost 200 years and we will continue to find effective ways to continue for 200 more."
