Budget hearings under way

The Legislature's appropriations committee will begin hearings this week on how to straighten out the state's books through the end of the fiscal year, according to The Associated Press.

The hearings come after a curtailment order from Gov. Paul LePage, requiring spending cuts to make up the state's expected $35.5 million revenue shortfall.

The supplemental budget through the year's end also aims to make up a nearly $90 million shortfall in the state's Medicaid program.

The news service reports the hearings are slated to finish Jan. 28, after which time the committee will take up the governor's proposed $6.3 billion budget covering fiscal years 2014-15.
